Elective Project: Print, Narrative & the Page
This is the final piece copy for my second MA Graphic Design elective project, the task was to convey a Narrative Journey (Linear or Non-Linear) by first taking pictures of a journey we had taken and then working into them with scalpel, glue, folds and most importantly the use of the photocopier. I chose to photograph a journey around London and took photographs of anything I saw that had either an interesting shape, shadow or example of typography. I ended up with roughly 30 photographs which I thinned out to about 25, I then cut away the areas of the photos that I felt were not the main focus with a scalpel and enlarged them repeatedly until they distorted and broke down into a kind of pixelated pattern.
The next step was to experiment with paper stocks and printing method. I eventually chose 175gsm GF Smith Colorplan paper in Candy Pink, Pistachio Green, Sorbet Yellow, Pristine White and Cool Grey and added a generic 150gsm Magenta paper stock from the college shop for use as the half folds. The book was going to be printed using inkjet, but I eventually plumped for laser print for better quality and black density. The book was cut, drilled and bound by the print department of L.C.C.
